Dominion Convention 2026: In Their Own Words — Lizz Lindsay
Continuing our “In Their Own Words” series from the 50th Dominion Convention in Winnipeg, Branch 44 delegate Lizz Lindsay shares what stood out to her during this historic Centennial Convention — from the business sessions and elections to some particularly meaningful moments.
It was truly a privilege to attend this Convention on behalf of Branch 44. The excitement around the Legion’s 100 years of service to Veterans, Remembrance and Community Service permeated all the presentations and business.
This was the first Convention I’ve attended that included a banquet for all the delegates. It was lovely and an opportunity for the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, Jill McKnight, to reconnect with her long-time friend Heddy Bing. One of Jill’s staff was charged with finding Heddy among over 1000 folks attending, to bring her to the head table for a visit. Jill has long and strong connections to many Legion branches which gives her a unique understanding of our value and role.
The next day was our National TVS Executive meeting where a new Executive was elected and installed. Dawn Adams from Alberta is our new President, Patti Paul from Saskatchewan is our new first VP, Glenn Hodge from BC is our VP, Marguerite Wolfe Secretary/Treasurer and Danny Redden, Past President. A banquet for TVS delegates was held on Sunday night with 30 comrades attending.
The business sessions, speakers, elections and debates were interesting. The days were long and the seats, strapped together, were like sitting in economy on a small plane. No breaks were scheduled during the days that went from 8:30 until 4:00. Each provincial group had a space for delegates. We sat with the TVA/TVS section.
I’d like to highlight two events that were very meaningful to me. First was the unveiling of the new Legion Centenary Toonie by the Royal Mint. The artwork was done by a poster contest winner, and she was able to attend and speak to the delegates. Each of us was able to purchase 5 coins before they went into circulation and were presented with an additional coin at our caucus meeting.
Second was the re-election of our Immediate Past President Valerie MacGregor to Dominion VP. We wish her and all the elected officers well.
It was a pleasure to spend time with Heddy, Douglas, Tong and Val each day. I also enjoyed reconnecting with comrades from across the province and country. Thank you to the Branch for allowing me to attend this very special convention on your behalf.
