In Memoriam: Comrade Gerry Vowles
It is with great sadness that Branch 44, TVS, announces the passing of our fellow Comrade and dual member, Gerry Vowles, on July 31, 2026.
Gerry's life was defined by service—to his country, to veterans, to The Royal Canadian Legion, and to his community. For an extraordinary 47 years, he dedicated himself to the Legion, leaving an enduring legacy through his leadership, commitment, and unwavering support of veterans across British Columbia and the Yukon.
Throughout his years of Legion service, Gerry held numerous distinguished positions, including:
Past BC/Yukon Command President (2005–2007)
Past BC/Yukon Command Trustee (2017–2019)
Treasurer of BC/Yukon Command (1993–2003)
Founding Member of the BC/Yukon Legion Foundation
In addition to his remarkable Legion service, Gerry proudly served 28 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. His dedication to serving others extended well beyond the military and the Legion, as he spent many years coaching young people in lacrosse, hockey, swimming, and water polo, making a lasting difference in countless lives.
Gerry's exceptional contributions were recognized through many of the Legion's highest honours, including the Presidential Citation, Meritorious Service Medal, Palm Leaf, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the King Charles III Coronation Medal, and the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.
While Gerry was a long-serving Life Member of Branch #179 Grandview/Collingwood, Branch 44 was honoured to have him as a valued dual member. His wisdom, generosity, and steadfast commitment to the principles of remembrance and service enriched our branch and the wider Legion family.
Gerry's leadership, integrity, and compassion touched countless people over the years. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Legion members and veterans who follow in his footsteps.
